Recovery

I want so badly to do a post about this past weekend, but I can't come up with anything that hasn't already been said.
Just know that for me to be speechless about anything must mean that it's pretty special. I couldn't be happier for Patrick & Erica. It is wonderful and so refreshing to see people that have centered their lives around their love.
And I get a really cool sister-in-law out of the deal.

Congratulations Pat and Erica! We love you.

So here was what the plan was supposed to be for today. Since we're still in full recovery mode from this weekend (I can't describe to you the piles of clean clothes that need to be put away), I was going to take Ria up on her offer to take both Nathanael and Sam while Caroline was in school today. I need some down time (and some time to digest the first part of the Tenth Inning that was on last night), so I took her up on her offer. I had big plans for today. They included putting away all the clothes, cleaning out Sammy's drawers (I tried to put an 18 month sized t-shirt on him the other day) and general cleaning of the house. If it was a good day, I could probably get dinner made and lunches put together for the rest of the week, too.
That's bush league psyche-out stuff. Laughable, man. Ha!
I should know better than to even use the word plan (it has four letters for a reason, you know). When I came in the house after dropping the boys off (and after stopping at CVS for note cards because I was getting my Thank You notes done today as well, mind you), I sat in the basement, had an epiphany that if my basement was in ruins, it was somehow representative of my life and proceeded to tear it apart. While it made perfect sense to me at the time, I'm slowly appreciating that my logic isn't always sound and that I should really have a cooling off period of at least 72 hours before deciding to tackle large projects.
The fact that I can walk through my basement makes me feel a bit better (who cares if Sam is wearing a Superman shirt that makes his belly show every time he raises his arms - HE doesn't mind) and I'll get to tackling the drawers and the other stuff later.
Probably.
Maybe?
Someday.
If I have to.

Here are a couple pictures from the weekend.
For the amount of chaos we live in, we clean up pretty well, huh?
I have to go downstairs and sit in the basement to appreciate my work...

A Contest

I'm convinced that some days are contests to see how much I can get done.
Today is one of those days.
Which means that I should be doing other things than blogging, but I decided to give myself 20 minutes to dawdle because I have already gotten everyone up, ready to go & out the door, dropped off Caroline at school, gone to the post office, gone grocery shopping and am currently covered with spit-up. And when I say covered, I mean covered. At least it somewhat counteracts the smell of the 40% zinc oxide diaper rash cream I have all over me.
Yummy.
Now all I have to do is all the laundry, clean the house, put away groceries, hem some pants, get things together for the week and get and put together a crib our neighbor has given us. No problem, right?
But Nate, in spite of being spitty, has been a very smiley boy today.
I can't get enough of this kid, reflux and all. =-)

Oh - and guess who found their thumb?!?
Let the self soothing begin.
Can we call it or what?

Sunday Afternoon

I just got back from Septemberfest at Church with the kids - so it's nice and quiet because everyone is resting.
I need to go for (another) walk later on because the lady in the baked goods booth slid THREE extra whoopie pies in our bag. My strategy was to only buy three so there wouldn't be one for me.
My plan backfired.
But the pie was sooooo good. =-)

Busy week coming up. I'm making lists to help me remember what's on my To Do List.
I don't know how I'm ever going to have time to work outside the house. I know we'll figure it out and that my standards for the house (and just about everything else) are going to have to relax a bit. The kids have stepped up and done well with their chore charts. They still need a fair amount of supervision (meaning that sometimes it would be much quicker for me to just do the task at hand) - they do end up helping a decent share. We're trying to find our happy medium (while staying sane). I really don't think it's too much to have a clean house and three children aged four and under. Do you?

Caroline and I had a special girls night last night and went to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The theater group did a great job. We had a very enjoyable time. The music was loud enough that no one noticed (or seemed to care) that we were singing along.

Last week we went to a family outing for my company at Kimball Farm and had a really good time. They gave us $40 worth of cards to use between the mini golf and the arcade. There was no way we could use it all (even with playing video games), but Jim and I put in a good try. Caroline ended up getting a fairy wand and Sam got a very cool bouncy ball with our winnings...
Caroline's favorite part was the cotton candy:

And I think Sam's was, too. Poor Nate was just along for the ride:

Sam even sat to get his face painted (don't mind the buggers, there wasn't enough kleenex in the world to catch all the snot in our house last week):

Now that Nathanael is feeling a little better (he's still really congested, though - the pediatrician said it would be a while before he clears out), we're starting to get some more smiles and interaction. I remember doting over Caroline and just waiting with the camera so I could document her first smiles. I guess that's the difference between the first and the third...you have to smile when I have the camera ready if you want record of it, kid!

I found a box of old winter guard costumes in the basement. I'm not quite ready to show her the costume I wore in St Anns, but Caroline really took the costume I wore in eighth grade (which still fits, I must mention - barely - but I can get in it!). I think Caroline thinks that the more sequins an outfit has, the better it must be.
Here are a few pictures of the kids at Septemberfest today. They enjoyed the pony rides.

And now it's time to get going and try to embrace the insanity of this upcoming week!
Wish us luck!

Fumes

As in running on fumes (supplemented by a little coffee and some Girl Scout cookies covered in Nutella)...So if this post is a little disjointed or doesn't make sense, you know why. =-)

It has been a long week, but everyone is okay now - which is the most important thing.
Nate gave us a scare. This resulted in two sick visits to the pediatrician (with a follow up scheduled for this week) and two trips to the ER (one in Worcester and one in Boston).
The little bugger has an ear infection. Both Sam and Caroline had colds, so when Nate started getting snotty, I didn't think anything of it. He kept getting more and more congested, but I thought we were handling it okay by sticking him in the bathroom with us when we were showering, using saline drops and the snot sucker, keeping him upright and by feeding him as often as he would take. I really hesitated before calling the doc (the kid has green snot - is it really worth a trip to the doctor?), but when I noticed him using a bit more energy to breathe than I thought he should I finally called.
They took us right in and promptly sent us to UMASS and then to Children's Hospital in Boston. What a wild day.
All the testing has come back negative so far.
It was scary and I am very thankful he's on the mend. I can't imagine having a really sick baby. Sitting in the ER at Children's made me count my blessings. And snuggle my baby a bit tighter.
Nate is on antibiotics and steadily becoming less congested. He's doing much better feeding and was able to sleep supine yesterday for about 20 minutes.
Sometimes he still sounds like Darth Vader when he's sleeping, but it's so much better than when it sounded like this.
The good news is that, in spite of the infection, Nate has put on TWO POUNDS in the past two weeks putting him at 10lbs 15 oz. I thought his clothes were getting small! He's wearing some six month stuff already! He's not chunky - he's just a solid kid.
Don't you just want to kiss those cheeks?

Caroline had her first ballet/tap class today. Seems like she had a wonderful time. She looked like she was so much older in her leotard and bun this morning.

I felt so bad for Sam this morning - he kept saying, "I want to go to dance class, too." And he repeated it for the whole hour we were doing errands while she was in class. With Caroline doing so many fun things, I think he's feeling a bit left behind. Poor kid. We're playing a lot of trains and dancing a lot while watching "Fiddler on the Roof" (he LOVES it and so do I). We're trying to emphasize what a good big brother he is and how important he is to the family. He frequently offers to help with housework and to take care of or hold Nate. It's tough to be the middle child, I think.
But, as Jim put so eloquently this morning - here's our Thinker:

And our stinkers! Disclaimer: thinker and stinkers are subject to change...

Photographic Evidence

That the little urchin can smile. We've been seeing evidence of it for days, but we've thought it might be from gas or something else.
While it's not the best picture ever, I KNOW this smile was a result of a game of peek-a-boo!
And I think he bears a striking resemblance to another little boy I know.
We had a fun day yesterday at Old Sturbridge Village. We even got to meet Curious George and Ruff Ruffman (Caroline had doubts it was the real Ruff, so she wouldn't go up to him).
Between meeting the cartoon characters and seeing Auntie Dr Chrissy, both kids had a red letter day.

And again, it's not the greatest of pictures, but it was real treat to see Sam snuggle up to "My Baby Trippy".
I'm finding that good pictures are harder to come by. I'd like to blame it on having a slow camera, but I really think it's from a slow Mama and lack of sleep. =-)
What I find even more impressive that he hasn't told us once yet to "put him back," which were almost the first words out of Caroline's mouth when we brought Sam home.
And here are the kids this morning "entertaining" Nate. Note that all the Care Bears have diapers on them now...
At least they're not doing this to poor Nathanael. Soon enough, I suppose!

Worcester Talk

I just saw this article in the Telegram & Gazette.
Simply hysterical and true.
Very, very true.
Working with mostly older Worcesterites, I had to figure out a lot of these on my own. I'd be lying to you if I told you I still didn't have to ask people to translate things for me at times.

Welcome to Wuss-tah
WORCESTERU:A LOOK AT THE COLLEGE WORLD
By Paul Jarvey

Picture
Sure we talk funny. People from Mississippi talk funny. So do Minnesotans, Oregonians and New Yorkers. Especially New Yorkers. The bigger question is why does Worcester have a lake, a village, college and an avenue named Quinsigamond (shortened to Quinsig by all locals), but they're scattered around the city like leaves in the fall?

No, it doesn't make sense unless you know that the community was called Quinsigamond long before it was called Worcester. It's a Native American word that means: “boy, do these folks talk strange.”

So, if you've wandered onto campus from New Jersey, Ohio or some other place where “R” doesn't rhyme with “ah,” and you want the lowdown on the local lingo, you've come to the right place. We've assembled a handy guide to the odd and sometimes confusing Worcester dialect.

Before we get to that, though, you need to know how to properly pronounce Worcester. Don't make it three syllables. Just forget that first E is even there. And never, never, never put an H in the middle of Worcester. People will make fun of you. So, how do you correctly pronounce Worcester?

You've dropped the first E and boiled it down to two syllables. Now eliminate both R's. While you're at it, better get that C out of there. Make the remaining E sort of an AH and turn the O into a U. Wuss-tah. It doesn't rhyme with sister or rooster. The first syllable rhymes with puss. Go ahead and say it. Wuss-tah.

Now you're almost ready to walk into a spa in the village and order a regular coffee and maybe a couple of tonics and a grinder or club sandwich. One more thing. Always include your state as part of your hometown, as in:

“I'm from Wusstahmass.”

Confused?

The following guide to the peculiarities of the Central Mass. dialect should help:

Boys Trade — Worcester Technical High School (It's also known as Voke, but if you call it Worcester Tech you'll only confuse long-time Worcesterites. See Tech entry below)
Bubbler — Water fountain
Candlepin Bowling — Invented in Worcester in 1880 by Justin P. White, this game is also called “little balls.” Find a candlepin alley and you'll discover it's a far superior game to Ten Pin, which is known locally as “big balls.”
Cellar — Basement. (Those who went through the city's public school system in the 1960s or earlier sometimes use basement as a synonym for bathroom.)
Club sandwich — Italian sub
Diner — Good food cheap, but it's only considered a diner if it was made by Worcester Lunch Car Co. The Boulevard (also known as the Bouly) and the Miss Worcester are two examples.
Dinner — Lunch
Dungarees — Blue jeans
East Side — Working-class neighborhoods east of Main Street
Elastic — Rubber band
The Expressway — Interstate 290
Frappe — Ice cream, milk and flavored syrup. (A milkshake leaves out the ice cream.)
Full Worcester — Candlepin bowling term (also Half Worcester and Quarter Worcester)
Grinder — Submarine sandwich
The Hill — Belmont, Vernon or Grafton
Jimmies — Chocolate sprinkles
The Lake — Quinsigamond
Package Store — Place to buy beer and liquor
Packy — Shorthand for package store (also the nickname of the popular bartender at Suney's)
Parlor — Living room
Piazza — Porch
Picker, Picker Bush, Pricker Bush — A burr or other vegetation that grows on a bush and sticks to your clothing. Some use the same word for any bush with thorns.
The Pike — The Massachusetts Turnpike
The Project — Great Brook Valley
Regular coffee — Fully-caffeinated with cream and sugar
Spa — A corner store with soda fountain
Square — All rotaries are squares, but not all squares are rotaries
Tech — WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute).
Three-decker — Not a sandwich, but a house with three floors, huge apartments, hundreds of stairs and nowhere close to enough parking
Tonic — Soda pop (of any flavor or brand)
The Village — Quinsigamond (sort of near Holy Cross)
West Side — Neighborhoods west of Park Avenue, desirable digs unless you have to get to Boston in a hurry.
Wicked — Very as in “the veal is wicked good.”
Wormtown, the Worm — Slang for Worcester (City fathers hate the word)
The Woo — Slang for Worcester as well as for the Miss Worcester Diner

•

How to say it:
Auburn — AW-bin
Aunt — AHnt (never Ant)
Berlin — BURL-in
Clinton — Klint'n
Hapast — 30 minutes after the hour, as in “we're gonna eat dinner at hapast 12.”
Lake Chargoggagoggmanchaugagoggchaubunagungamaugg - Wep-stah Lake
Leicester — Less-tah
Leominster — Lemon-stah
Millbury — Mill-bree
New York — Noo Yawk (Rhymes with talk)
Northboro — Nohth-bro (also, West-bro, South-bro and Marl-bro)
Petersham — Peters-am
Pillows — Pill-iz
Pizza — Peetz-er
Route — Same as root (never rhymes with bout)
Shrewsbury — SHOES-bree
Southbridge — Sowt-bridge
Tatnuck — Tatnick
Webster — Wep-stah
Westminster — West-minister
Windows — Wind-iz
With — Witch, as in “Who ya got witch yer”, or “I'll be witch yer in a minute.” (Alternate pronunciation: Wit. “I'll be right wit ya.”)

Thursday Night?

I'll be honest, I don't have a clue what day today is. But I know Caroline has school tomorrow, so that must make it either Tuesday or Thursday...
We're listening to the Oriole's broadcast. I'm hoping the Sox can pull this one off. The past few games have been ridiculous.
Seriously.
Losing to the Orioles? Even Caroline and Sam know they're awful. I think seeing their bullpen implode when we were at Camden Yards scarred them permanently - "Mom - The Indians were losing, but the Orioles blew it." Yes dear, they most certainly did...

I thought it was cute this morning, though when Jim put on the t-shirt of his favorite man-crush without even seeing that I had put on my Yooooooouk t-shirt. Who says you don't start looking / thinking / acting alike after a while?
Nate is being a fussbudget and I'm going to try to get some sleep while I can. Six o'clock comes mighty early and we have a list of things to do that would choke a horse. I'm realizing I'm not the best at prioritizing since I want everything done yesterday. I'm working on that one, but can't really promise anything.
I'm wondering what this hurricane is going to amount to. Right now NOAA is saying it's 50/50 if we're getting tropical storm force winds up here - but we have to keep looking at updates because as of this morning it was only a 20% or so chance. I don't think it will hurt to get all our flashlights out and the crank up radio ready to go. And, as my mother reminded me from the ice storm a few years ago, I need to get the phone number of a local hotel on hand just in case. =-)

Here are some pictures from today. They're interspersed with pictures of our (finally) new but (still) defective oven on our camera...at this point our goal is just to get a working oven by Thanksgiving. It has only been since March that we've been unable to use it. Grrrrrrr.

Here is CJ reading the Thomas book to Nate. He's super interested, I can tell.

Nate just loves together time with his siblings:

First Day of School (continued)...

This will be fast as I'm trying to feed Nate and type at the same time. Let's just say Nate is winning.
We had no problem dropping off Caroline at school this morning. While we were filling out paper work she came over to Jim, kissed him and said, "Good bye, Dad!" Or, in other words - "Don't let the door hit you on the way out."
Sam, on the other hand, thought he was staying at school and had a tantrum of epic proportions when it was time to leave. "I no go home. I stay at school. I stay at schoooooooool. Please. I play with trains. I stay here. I NO GO HOME!!!!!"
You get the drift.

But the perceived wrong was rectified with a trip to the Donut Cafe II. Chocolate donuts can fix a lot.

Nate had a good time, too. Even without donuts.

Here are the before school pictures. We were totally impressed with ourselves for getting everyone out the door by 7:30. I sure hope I'm as efficient when I have to do this on my own soon...
