The
Tatnuck Bookseller is closing. Being an old mattress factory converted into a bookstore/cafe and right in our neighborhood, this was one of the coolest parts of living right in Worcester. We are a little confused because EVERY time we've been in there - not only has the store been full, but the restaurant has been packed.
On Thursday night we went there to get some dessert and found the doors locked with a sign taped up saying that employees can expect their last paychecks in the mail. Having been through the lay-off thing before - I can say with certaintly that finding the doors locked with a sign on them is defintely the most crappy (not to mention least classy) way I've seen it done.
We are very disappointed. I think if this owner expects to compete with Borders and WaldenBooks, he had a much better shot of it in Worcester (doesn't he know that true Worcester-ites NEVER leave the city when they don't have to?) , rather than that awful, stale shopping center in Westborough (where people aren't going to go because they're going to Shopper's World in Framingham, anyway).
Don't expect to see us there anytime soon.
If Worcester wants to be more than a bedroom community of Boston - we NEED to figure out ways that businesses like this can flourish. We have to maintain our own identity rather than falling into the trap of suburb.
Any ideas?
