Craig Wilson Plays Name That Movie

Based on the quote below, found by rotoworld.com, regarding the Pirates shopping him around a lot this spring, for some reason...

The latest rumor has Craig Wilson being traded to the Braves for John Thomson. Rarely has a team been so interested in trading one of their best players at any cost. "At this point, I'm really not going to worry about it," Wilson said. "The only thing I can do is go out and hit the ball and catch the ball and throw the ball. If something happens, it happens. I'll pack up and go." Mar. 27 - 10:55 am et

SUNY IT Wildcats Sweep Vassar College

Game 1 was a complete game victory, while the Wildcats trailed 3-0 before getting 10 unanswered...got close in the end to make a 10-8 victory, but in the end, SUNY IT got two W's out of the weekend...

GyroBall Pitch

This is for uncle Matty - try to get one of your pitcher roommates to throw this pitch! Imported from the Japanese Leagues (Seibu Lions?), for your enlightenment/ entertainment...

Again...

Caroline was not able to make it to the start of the UNH Hockey game today. Chicks continue to dig their sleep.

Chicks Dig...

...UNH Men's Hockey . She loves her new hockey sweater (even if it is a bit big). Everyone is buzzing in town about the Action at the Centrum here in Worcester. UNH plays in Albany this weekend and some of the players are seeing it as a sort of homecoming. Hopefully the little goalie from Michigan State won't get the best of UNH. We'll have to wait until noon to see...

Preparing for the Draft

With less than one week to go until the Tolleson Draft, everyone is busy preparing. Here are Jim and Caroline discussing various slugging percentages and how that effects a players roto value.
Yeah, right - they're talking about how cool it was to have Joe Torre on Seasame Street the other day!

Meeting Junior...

Caroline and the kitties are finally starting to acknowledge eachother (be that good or bad, I'm not sure). In the top picture Junior is running away after she grabbed a handfull of hair (trust me on this one - he, for the first time EVER, moved too quickly to get into the picture). Guess Junior didn't learn after that - he came right back for more. We will continue to keep their visits supervised for a very long time, though.

More on the Gates Color Guard...

This from today's Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. After the HUGE win in the Syracuse Regioinal, they still look really good going into Dayton. First is an awful hard position to be in going to championships - but they seem to be handling it just fine. At this rate, scoring over 90 in their most recent show (and I remember days when a score over 60 would be means for a celebration) looks like they'll get bumped up to Open Class next year. I am so proud to have been affiliated (a really long time ago, but affiliated none the less) with such a great and classy organization that has always put the needs of the performers first.

You can check out their website (that had been out of commission for years). Let's hope they update the member and staff bios before leaving for Dayton.

Good luck to all the girls and to Mr Hoppe!

PS - here is a link to the Blessed Sacrament Color Guard that I marched in before I aged out. They too, look good going into Dayton, being ranked fifth in Independent World Class. Unfortunately, due to limited practice space, funding, and so on - there is no World Class Guard for St Ann's in Neponset (another guard I once was in). Boy - could those girls spin. They are sorely missed not only in Eastern Mass, but in WGI.
I wish everyone the best in championships.

Gates Chili Color Guard Update

With their March 18 win of the Syracuse Regional, and other recent wins in the Mid-Atlantic and Boston Regionals, Gates Chili looks to be in GREAT shape heading to Dayton. Word on the street has Gates ranked first in Scholastic A class in the nation.

From the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle:

Thumbs upFor the Gates Chili High School color guard for finishing in first place last weekend at the Mid Atlantic Power Regional Competition in Trenton, N.J. The color guard also finished in first place at a regional competition in Boston earlier in February. Dick Hoppe is the director

The clip from the Mid-Atlantic regional looks great. They look to have a really strong weapon's book and it looks like more of an Open class show, rather than A class.

It would be wonderful to have a medal come back to Rochester. Mr Hoppe has come a LOOOONNGGG way from the "Girls, Girls, Girls" days. Congratulations!

Stand Up Baby

Caroline continues to love to be a "stand up baby", especially with Grammy.

At Least They're Playing Baseball SOMEWHERE Up North

Hot off the presses: SUNY IT lost to Farmingdale State on Sunday. But SUNY does appear to have made a good showing. It has been a while since IT has updated their baseball roster / schedule on the website. When they do, it will be linked here. I was (through my sources) able to round up a picture of Matt, though. Yes, it is his baseball picture and NOT a mugshot. Anyways...

The Wildcats were led by sophomore outfielder Michael Lewis (Clinton, NY) as he went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Junior third baseman Matthew Leahy (Rochester, NY) and junior shortstop Manny Santiago (Newburgh, NY) both added three hits for SUNY IT.

On the horizon for the Wildcats this week:

Sat. 4/1 Oneonta* H - 12 p.m.
Sun. 4/2 Plattsburgh* A - 12 p.m.
Tue. 4/4 Cazenovia A - 2 p.m.
Fri. 4/7 St. John Fisher H - 1 p.m
*SUNYAC Conferece Game

Good Luck!

The Up Side

Finally a semi-decent picture of the Leahys. Do you have any idea how hard it is to get BOTH of my parents to smile at the same time? Sorry Dad, but this was the best one of the bunch!
Being in Rochester this weekend allowed Papa Leahy got to take some really nice pics. Here is one of the best.
It was so wonderful to have everyone together this weekend. It kind of felt like Christmas. Caroline got to meet cousins, Uncles, Great Aunts and Uncles and even a Great-Great Uncle. How many people can say that they have a Great-Great Uncle?! Besides being a little cranky today - she seems to be no worse for the wear! She must be a resilient baby to meet that many Leahys and still be okay!

Redwing's Kubel Could Break With Twins

According to Gardy...from rotoauthority.com:

A borderline miss for My Guys was Jason Kubel. I'm a huge fan of the post-hype Twins prospect who was derailed by knee surgery for all of 2005. Today Twins manager Ron Gardenhire indicated that Kubel is a dark horse to snag the right field job out of spring training:
"Your thought is on the cautious side, but let me tell you what, he's swinging pretty good, and he's moving pretty good, and if he's the best player out there, that's who will be playing out there."
If he somehow racks up 550 ABs, Kubel is a guy who could hit .300 with 15-20 HR for the Twins. Whether he'll steal bases again is in question. He swiped 16 in 90 Triple A games in 2004 before the injury.

Red Sox In Stereo?

Could be...Sox are negotiating with WBOS (92.9 FM) to move their broadcasts from WEEI (awful when the Sox are not on) to WBOS...intersting move, considering that WBOS is one of my favorite radio stations overall.

Sushi Girl!

Thanks for the great shirt Ian and Cyndi!
Hopefully we can get to the FuGakYu soon. It has been almost a year since I've been able to have "real" sushi.
On the shirt appears to be: Ebi, a California roll, and some Tamago. It may be a while before she has the coordination for the chop sticks.

What's The Verdict?

Zoe is a bigger hit than Cookie Monster or Elmo (thank goodness). But I'm not sure she knows what to think yet. We'll see how she does when introduced to Super Grover.

BBBBBBRRRRR....

In her free time, she's really training for next year's Iditarod.

Goodbye Kirby

As I remember being chastised by my mother for wasting a whole box of kleenex and using them as "Home Run Hankies" in 1987 and game 6 in 1991, Kirby Puckett's death makes me so sad. He was one of us. Physically he may not have been the most gifted, but he made the most of what he had and loved every minute of it.

We will miss you.

She may only be seven weeks old, but she loves to stand and (almost) be as tall as Daddy.

Spring Training Games Have Started!

Finally! Spring Training games have started. Life is always a little bit better when there's a baseball game on. Unfortunately, Caroline wasn't able to make it to 7pm to see the start of the first Red Sox vs Twinkies game. Chicks may dig small ball, but they apparently also dig their sleep.

Untitled

Any help with the title of the picture is greatly appreciated. All I can come up with is that she looks like a baby sailor / gangster rapper visiting Paris.

More on Cooperstown

Finally there will be a women in Cooperstown. But hopefully, before it's too late, the committee will see that John Jordan "Buck" O'Neil belongs there as well. Sure he was helped by being one of the main storytelling sources for Ken Burns in his Baseball series, but Buck was a force to be reckoned with as a ballplayer, manager, scout and now is chairman of the Negro League Baseball Museum. He has been involved in the game in some capacity (except for a 2 year stint in the Navy during World War II since 1937. Yup, you read that right - 1937.

O'Neil won two batting titles, was named to three Negro League All Star teams, managed four Negro League All Star teams, led the Kansas City Monarchs to four titles and then was a scout for the Cubs for over 30 years.

It seems that the Baseball Writers have something against people who are still actually alive. Too bad the comments section of their site is yet to be up and running. I can't think of someone I would rather see in Cooperstown than Buck O'Neil.
