New Years Eve

Wow.
2014?
To think back on it all, I get a bit overwhelmed.
Another year older.   Another year wiser (?).  Another year of life experiences to draw from and our first full year as a family of six.
It has been a lot.  Sometimes it seemed like too much.
Most of the time our acclimation to chaos served us very well.

We're learning to roll with the punches, focus on the Big Stuff, accentuate the positive, whine less, worry less, do more, open up to learning, want what we have, love greatly and live in the present.

We've all come a long way this year, doing things that we never thought we could.
I love it.
If we can keep that up...we'll be doing just fine.

It was too much for Nate...he fell asleep early.  Seems to be his MO in OBX.

Some pictures from our weekend in OBX.
An excellent time was had by all - we got time to hang out, time to hang at the beach, time to chill and time for extra sleep.
A very beautiful thing, indeed.

Awwww.

Just a preview of the cute pics from this weekend.

Waiting for Santa

We are so fortunate to live in a community where Santa comes by fire truck.
A blue fire truck, in fact.  ;)
Here are some of the neighborhood kids gathering before Santa came through the neighborhood before Christmas.
Yes - only some of the kids...there are a lot!

Sam

Too often, Sam doesn't get the good press that he should.
His sister is bright enough, his youngest brother is cute enough and his middle brother is NATE enough that sometimes Sam gets over looked.
He is kind, caring, intelligent, intuitive and empathetic.  He has many traits we chalk up to "Sammy being Sammy" that life just wouldn't be the same without.
The gains he is making in school this year are remarkable.  He loves it.  He loves to read.
Trains, Star Wars, Super Heroes.
He is a sponge for learning.
He is an original.

Sitting.

We had a lovely weekend with Grammy and Grampy.
So lovely, fact, that we forgot to take pictures.
*d'oh*
We weren't able to get to the Smithsonian like Sam wanted to for his birthday because of the snow and had a very nice time hanging out at home instead.
A little breathing room this time of year is good.
So...instead of doing the 34 things that I had wanted to do today, I'm writing.  This was #35 on the list, but I decided that it has slipped too far down.

This morning has been character developing for me.
Nate is in an "All About Mama" phase.
We hear the words, "Mama, I want you" or "Mama I need you" very often.  And it's not that I *don't* want to hear these words...it's just that when they are spoken, Nate is usually attached to my leg or my belt loop or has my hair wrapped around one of his fingers while trying to climb up me using my c-section scar for a foothold.
Makes for a slow get away.
So - I had to dress Nate today because "I need you, Mama.  I wuv you.  I wuv all of you," (insert Mama heart melt) and "I need to pway wif your hayah."  So he got dressed.  But it wasn't enough to pick up his room, brush his teeth and go downstairs.  He came in the bathroom while I was showering ( I was a captive audience), sat himself on the toilet and cheered me through my shower routine.  "Wow!  Good washing, Mama!"  "Be sure to get you pits!" and "Mama, why you naked?"  My efforts to hide behind the towels draped over the glass shower door were for naught - so I asked for some privacy and was amazed when he got up and left.  Or so I thought...
He was really standing at the door.  This is when I lost it and sent him away - resulting in many tears.
A bit later the situation was repeated when I had to go to the bathroom (Are you pooping, Mama?  Good job pooping!")  and when I had to get the mail and when I had to switch the laundry...you get the jist.
Cute and exasperating and tiring.
But mostly cute.

Unlike my older children, whose behavior resulted in a Gold Star Parenting Moment this Saturday at church.
Let me begin by saying how well the kids did in general this weekend.  They were extremely well behaved.  They had their moments...we all do...but on the whole they did great.
We left the Youngers with Grammy and Grampy and went to church on Saturday night.  I did Children's Liturgy and with the weather, we couldn't count on having a helper other than Jim - with the Littles at home, it was much easier (thank you Grammy & Grampy).
We got through Liturgy.  The kids were a bit scootchy, but were okay.
Until the Sign of Peace.
Sam did not reciprocate in a way Caroline thought was appropriate (you mean mouth covering and gagging aren't okay?).
Subsequently, Caroline tried to *make* Sam give her peace
Uh-huh...you-know-what followed...
Of course,  we sit in the front row - so there was extra room for the knock down, drag out, WWE style smackdown that took place before we had to physically separate them and put them on opposite sides of the pew.
If the floor could have swallowed me, I would not have protested at that moment.
Ugh.
We did make apologies to the people in the pews behind us for interfering with their enjoyment of Mass.
Luckily, everyone that sits there was gracious and remarked how the antics elevated their appreciation of Mass (or at least said this to make me feel better).

I had a really big glass (or three) of wine when I got home.

Happy Birthday to Sam.

Happy Birthday, Buddy.
Hard to believe that you're six already.
We are so proud of you.  You are loving, empathetic, kind, gentle, smart, hard working and more than a little bit goofy.
We love you Sammy-Lammy-Ding-Dong!

26 Minutes

26 minutes  until the Muppet Show with Dudley Moore.
We have been getting ready for Christmas, Birthdays, Pageants, races...
It has been exhausting, frankly.
A snow day (or three) was just what we needed.

We banded with our neighbors to get most everyone shoveled out yesterday.  8" of snow is the most we seen in a few years.  We're supposed to get another three to five inches tomorrow.  Oy.  So much for recovery days after the race.
We headed to Delaware on Friday for the Rehoboth Half Marathon.  The weather cleared up - 13.1 miles in 37 degrees wasn't actually that bad.  It was a small race - much of it through Henlopin State Park - which was beautiful, if very muddy.  Because the roads to the park weren't shut down and us runners were on the side of the road, we didn't get much breathing room until Mile 9 when the full marathon broke away from the half.  The lack of hills was much appreciated, as was the Delaware State Trooper screaming at all of us (especially the men) drill sergeant style.  "Get across the street, Buttercup - I want to be home in time for Christmas!"
2:06:01.  Not quite the time I wanted.  There is plenty to work on for next time.
We got up our Christmas Tree.
It's fake because the thought of one more living thing in this house was enough to make me crazy(er).
It's pretty, though.  We took all the potholder loops that were too short and linked them together to make garland.

And I just looked up and realized that much of the Under 13 crowd in the neighborhood is watching The Muppet Show now...all of the sudden I have 7 kids instead of four!  Time to be the adult, I suppose!

So.

The Little League Museum in Williamsport, PA is great - like a Cooperstown for little people.
Apparently the only thing that will get all of us to sit and be still at the same time is watching a baseball game.

Otherwise Nate digresses into his normal state...
