Ice Storm: UPDATE

Good news - we're back up and have power, phone, cable (tho the wire is dangling close to the road) and we're waiting on DSL (more on DSL later).

Some quick grades:

  • Mass Electric (or whomever hooked us up): A+
  • Verizon [field service]: A+
  • Charter [customer service]: B-
  • Verizon [DSL Technical Support in India]: Big, Fat F---
  • Verizon [live human being in the US of A]: A for effort to try to help me.

Verizon Redirect Nonsense

I got this last night for the first time, probably because I type so few URLs into the brower (we use ie and forefox at home). You have to, in essence, find a website that does not exist (actually tough these days, since the big names like yahoo and google own the websites "near" theirs, like typing "yaho" instead of "yahoo". In techie terms, this is called a "404 error". Also, there are phishing sites out there that prey on bad typists as well.

I found this link about this very same thing - the verizon redirects - while typing to figure out what I had typed in the first place. Today at work, I remembered that a writer for an economics blog (his new updated one is here) that I read daily had the same problem and had to "opt out", but they made it pretty hard for him to do it.

I'm encountering the same problem. I have to click on about this page (far right button), then click on the hi-speed user opt-out link, and then pick one of the linksys routers to figure out how to fix the issue - it's not a simple opt out thing and you really need to know a little about this stuff - I know enough that I can do it. But how many people can follow this and then this?
